What is Marx trying to say here? How does it relate to historical materialism? Can you think of an example of what he is talking about?

asked in Sociology by
One of Marx’s most well knows quotations is in the German Ideology, where he states that, “ The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas: I.e., The class which is the ruling material force of society, is at the same time it’s ruling intellectual force.” What is Marx trying to say here? How does it relate to historical materialism? Can you think of an example of what he is talking about?
