Answers may vary.In 2002, juveniles were involved in approximately 8% of all homicides, a percentage that did not change in 2010. Although the number of murders involving juveniles sharply decreased between 1994 and 2000, it remained stable (with some fluctuations) between 2001 and 2010, and continued to decrease between 2011 and 2014 (OJJDP, 2015).Nonetheless, public perception, fueled by the high visibility and rapid dissemination facilitated by social media, remains affected by high-profile fatal events in schools:■ In April 1999, two students at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, shot 12 of their classmates and a teacher before killing themselves.■ In February 2009, an eighth grader named Lawrence King was shot in the head in his classroom in Oxnard, California, while classmates looked on horrified. Police allege that the shooter, 14-year-old Brandon McInerney, and some other boys had previously taunted King because he was a gay. At the time of his death, King was living in a shelter for abused and troubled children.■ In October 2015, a 15-year-old high school freshman at Marysville Pilchuck High in Marysville, Washington shot five students in the school cafeteria before committing suicide. Four of the students were fatally wounded.
