Listening involves selecting, attending, understanding, remembering, and responding. To select is to focus on one sound as you sort through various sounds competing for your attention. To attend is to maintain a sustained focus on a particular message. To understand is to assign meaning to messages. To remember is to recall information. To respond is to confirm your understanding of a message.
