Answer: Thermotherapy is application of heat whereas as cryotherapy is application of cold. Heat (thermotherapy) dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow to an area to speed healing, therefore it is effective for muscle strain, sprains, soreness, and arthritis; it also has a relaxing effect. Cold (cryotherapy), on the other hand, constricts blood vessels and is effective for reducing inflammation and inhibits pain stimuli, therefore it is the preferred treatment for acute injury. Contraindications for both include heart conditions, high or low blood pressure, and neuropathies.
