What steps must the international community take to ensure that violent conflict does not continue to erupt around the globe? In your discussion, specifically address what must be done to assist nations that are both poor but peaceful and post conflict. Address what some of the challenges of implementing the necessary policies to prevent violence and promote peace may be and how international organizations are attempting to go about meeting these goals.
What will be an ideal response?
Students should discuss how important it is for the international community to care about violence and its impacts and how violence touches communities far from the battlefield (think refugees). Students should highlight how international aid and assistance, particularly in poor regions, is essential to fund necessary infrastructure to facilitate peace and allow for long enough peace periods so that institutions may develop and provide for the people. Without the international community, the conflict trap cannot be avoided. Students should address the UN New Deal for Engagement in Fragile States and the role of social reforms, economic policy, political reforms, peacekeeping, and/or eliminating corruption.
