Evaluate the contribution of "nature" to perceptual and motor development by reviewing an infant's typical perceptual capabilities and reflexes.
What will be an ideal response?
Nature contributes greatly to the capabilities of the newborn. Initial reflexes that babies are capable of include the rooting reflex (to find food by turning toward the source of a touch), the sucking reflex (to take in food), the grasping reflex (to form a tight grip around something placed in the hand), and the Moro reflex (a startle reflex that is protective). Further, when considering nature's contribution to perceptual abilities, babies are born with the ability to taste, hear, smell, sense touch, and see. While their vision will improve over the first year of life, they are fully capable of using all of their senses from birth.
