Explain why observations of basal body temperature are useful for couples who want to get pregnant, but are only of limited use for couples who are trying to avoid getting pregnant.
What will be an ideal response?
The hormone, progesterone, is released after ovulation and is associated with a rise in body temperature. The slight rise in body temperature is evidence that a woman has already ovulated, and the elevation remains until the beginning of the next menstrual cycle. Couples who are trying to avoid getting pregnant cannot use the lower temperature as an indication that ovulation has not occurred because the temperature elevation is not immediate, and furthermore they must understand that sperm survive for several days in the female reproductive tract.
