Define oxidation and reduction reactions and explain why they are the key components to cleaning up the environment

What will be an ideal response?

The gain and loss of electrons can help with cleaning up chemical pollutants. Oxidation
is the removal of electrons and reduction is the gain of electrons. The removal of an electron
from a chemical pollutant may render it harmless by changing its chemical properties. The same
may be true if a chemical gains electrons during reduction. Oxidation and reduction are often
coupled, thus known as redox reactions.
