Briefly describe a renal diet. What referral may be needed and why?
What will be an ideal response?
Foods high sodium, phosphorus, and potassium will likely be limited because his kidneys are no
longer able to regulate these nutrients. His protein intake will be set at approximately 1.2 to 1.5 g/kg
daily. He may require iron, calcium, and folic acid supplementation. The meal plan will also consider
his DM. A referral to a registered dietitian (RD) would be helpful. The dietician will meet with him to
determine the best meal plan for him considering both his kidney disease and DM. The RD can work
with him to incorporate many of his favorite foods in a reasonable diet that he can live with.
