Describe some of the ethical dilemmas that exist when a social worker provides services under managed care.
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Ethical dilemmas under managed care include the limits and scope of confidentiality because detailed documentation, including the client’s symptoms, diagnosis, goals and objectives, modalities, and length of time needed to obtain results, is often required under managed care. Clients who require help with problems of living, such as adjustment disorders, receive limited services. Social workers must be sure that utilization-review decisions that are contrary to their professional judgment are protested, that clients are adequately informed about the risks associated with short-term or limited intervention, and that clients are assessed thoroughly for risks of self-injurious behaviors and the potential to harm others. Additionally, clients need to be fully informed of the pre- and current authorization process, their right to appeal a utilization decision, the potential invasion of their privacy by the review process, and other options available to meet their needs.
