What was the enlightenment, and what did this have to do with sociology?

During the "Enlightenment," or "Age of Reason," reason was used to understand the relationship of the individual and society (as opposed to faith or divine authority of the monarchy). Sociology applies the ideas of the Enlightenment (reason) to the study of society.
