What are the steps in an introductory VAKT lesson and why is each step important?
What will be an ideal response?
The steps in VAKT include the following:
• Establishing Rapport: Technique is explained and student volunteers a word she wants to learn. This involves the student and builds confidence in the technique.
• Using the Dictionary: Teacher locates student requested word in dictionary. This ensures that the word is accurately represented. Students are also introduced to the dictionary and alphabetizing skills.
• Demonstration: The teacher reports back how many syllables the word has and demonstrates how to trace it.
• Student Tracing: The student traces the word until she believes she can write it from memory. This focuses the students' attention on the whole word and its parts and may bond the word in memory.
• Writing from Memory: Once she feels she knows it, the student writes the word from memory and checks to see that she is correct. This provides some evidence that the student has learned the word. The word is filed away. In stage one, the word will be written in the experience story that the student is composing.
