Compare Allport’s criteria for mental health to that of other theorists.

What will be an ideal response?

Allport’s thoughts on mental health and mental illness are very similar to that of other personality theorists. He, like the humanists (e.g., Maslow, Rogers, and Jung) thought that the healthy person continued to grow throughout his/her life. Allport, like Horney, Sullivan, Fromm, and many others, thought that children needed a certain level of love, acceptance and security as they grow up in order to develop confidence and self-assurance. Negligence and over-indulgence, both, make it likely that the child will grow up neurotic. As for the criteria of a psychologically mature (healthy) person, these too overlap with ideas of other theorists. For example, Adler discusses social interest, which is similar to Allport’s concept of having an extended sense of self, and both saw this as a characteristic of a well-adjusted person. Many theorists, including Sullivan, Adler, and Horney, discussed the importance of being aware of our behaviors and the motivations for them. Likewise, they discussed the idea that those who are not well adjusted often are not aware of why they behave in the ways that they do. Jung discussed self-acceptance in that he encouraged people to develop all aspects of their personalities and to at least become aware of the darker sides of their personality (e.g., the shadow archetype). Having a realistic perception of the world, and having insight and humor are characteristics of Maslow’s actualizing person. Finally, having a unifying philosophy of life is a concept that can also be found in Adler’s striving for success or superiority.
