As with any aspect of culture, marriage practices and customs change over time. In some cultures,
and at certain times in their histories, changes are rapid and far reaching, whereas at other times
these customary practices remain fairly stable. In the United States, for example, marital practices
(at least in the Christian tradition) have not undergone widespread changes. In the 1940’s men
were expected to propose matrimony, the father of the bride usually “gave her away,” the
ceremony was officiated by a religious functionary or someone licensed by the state, the bride’s
family was responsible for the major expenses of a wedding, brides wore white dresses, and the
newlyweds typically took time after the ceremony for a honeymoon. These practices are still
followed today.
