How do you feel about the way Merton and other strain theorists view the American Dream?

What will be an ideal response?

Possible answer: It is very easy to accept strain theorists' assessment of the American Dream. Merton wrote on this many years ago, and it only seems to have intensified since. If you were to observe popular culture, there is plenty of evidence to support the appearance of an obsession with money, fame, beauty (which costs money), fancy cars, clothes, and couture (e.g., very expensive!). Many Americans also know the pitfalls of constant obsession with the American Dream. Take, for example, the recent film "Wolf of Wall Street," in which the lead characters never stop seeking financial gain, even though they have far exceeded 99% of the population in earnings and wealth, which eventual leads to very bad outcomes. While extreme, the allure of the American Dream entices many to do very bad things.
