The answer should include engaging in conversations with the child, observing the activities to which a child is drawn, observing his interactions with others, engaging in dramatic play and games with the child and observing the child over time in a variety of situations. When the teacher knows the needs, preferences and interests of the child, she can tailor activities to those needs. She can use the child's interests to teach a broad variety of skills and encourage autonomy. She can also provided support when the environment is not consistent with the child's preferences.
