Contrast algorithms and heuristics using an original, real-life example of problem solving. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of both of these problem-solving methods.

What will be an ideal response?

An algorithm is a methodological procedure that guarantees a solution to your problem, provided there is one, if you follow the procedure. A heuristic means you are using a "rule of thumb" to solve the problem-the solution is based on past experiences. In comparison to an algorithm, a heuristic is less time intensive, as it reduces the number of possible options, but a solution is not guaranteed. Student answers will vary based on the real-life problem they identify, but the answer should include at least one advantage and one disadvantage associated with each procedure in the scenario the student chooses.
