Provide an example of a deeply held opinion or attitude and explain why it meets that criterion.
What will be an ideal response?
ANS: A deeply held opinion or attitude must be expressed with considerable complexity and nuance. Each student’s example will be different. For example, many people take their religious beliefs very seriously and have complex answers to questions a researcher might ask about religion. Deeply held opinions or attitudes are characterized by the respondent’s subtlety and emotion when explaining and why the position is held may be emphasized. These would be deeply held opinions or attitudes. Some people have much shallower beliefs and attitudes about religion (E.g., “I’m against it!”) that lack nuance.
