It has been suggested that the environment might be a contributing factor in ADHD, that the "goodness of fit" between children and the settings in which they learn, live and play is critical in determining whether a learner is judged to be inattentive or hyperactive and whether they have the opportunity to develop age-appropriate attention skills. Answer:
Answers will vary; some may make the case that developmentally inappropriate expectations of young children lead them to be viewed as hyperactive and inattentive when their behaviors are actually age appropriate; when a child is viewed as hyperactive, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Alternately, the case may be made that ADHD is a way to excuse children from behaving in a disciplined and responsible manner and that ordinary discipline and behavioral interventions are required to develop responsible attending behaviors.
