Protection and preservation of the scene are therefore crucial because both avert the possibility of contamination of evidence, loss of evidence, or unnecessary movement of physical evidence. In the evidence-collection process, contamination of evidence occurs most commonly when evidence is not properly secured, is wrongfully mixed with other types of evidence, or is altered significantly from its original condition at the crime scene.
The preliminary investigation involves the identification and preservation of evidence, much of which is minute or “trace” evidence. Trace evidence is any type of material left at—or taken from—a crime scene or the result of contact between two surfaces.
The Locard’s exchange principle, also known as Locard’s theory or the transfer of evidence theory, was first put forward by twentieth-century forensic scientist Edmond Locard. Locard’s principle is applied to crime scenes where the perpetrator of a crime comes into contact with the scene, so he or she will both bring something into the scene and leave with something from the scene. “Every contact leaves a trace.”
Material transferred in this fashion is usually referred to as trace evidence, which generally refers to minute or even microscopic bits of matter that are not immediately apparent to the naked eye. Because of its microscopic nature, the criminal may be far less likely to eliminate it purposely than with more telltale evidence such as blood splattering or fingerprints.
