Discuss the historic use of relative and absolute dating to develop the Geologic Time Scale
Were relative dates or absolute dates first employed to develop this time scale? Why? What will be an ideal response?
The student should discuss that the Geologic Time Scale was first developed using relative
dating techniques in the 17th and 18th centuries. The advent of modern chemical theory and
analysis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries made the application of radiometric dating for
absolute dates possible. This was possible when Marie Curie and her colleagues discovered
radioactivity.
