In addition to vital sign monitoring, list four things you will do in the care of the patient who is newly postoperative after cataract surgery.
What will be an ideal response?
• Providing relief of pain, which is usually mild. If the person complains of sharp pain, or decreased vision, promptly notify the nurse.
• Being sure all needed items are within reach.
• Avoiding irritation to the surgical site. The person may complain of itching, or feel as if something (such as an eyelash) is in the eye. Fluid discharge may be present, and the eye may be sensitive to light and touch. Instruct the patient not to rub, scratch, or squeeze the eye.
• Helping the patient to adapt to temporarily blurred vision. This is normal due to the bright lights used in surgery and drops used to dilate the eyes. The problem will resolve on its own promptly.
• Assisting with initial ambulation, if needed. Most patients are able to walk without help immediately after surgery.
