Discuss the pathophysiology of lung transplantation and organ rejection.

What will be an ideal response?

Transplant recipients are at high risk for rejection of the transplanted lung. The body's immune system considers the transplanted organ an invader and may attack it. Because of the rejection risk, patients must take immunosuppressive (antirejection) medications. Rejection occurs most often during the first 3 months after transplantation, but the immunosuppressive medication may need to be taken indefinitely. Common immunosuppressive drugs used are cyclosporine, tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, azathioprine, and prednisone, which lower the body's immunity and increase the risk of infection.
