What are some of the reasons that the United States has failed to adopt universal health coverage? Why was comprehensive health care reform so difficult to pass in the United States? Why was (and is) the Affordable Care Act so controversial?
What will be an ideal response?
An ideal response will:
1, Discuss how, ideologically, many Americans have been against universal health care because they consider it socialized medicine. Opponents of universal health care assert that this type of policy would undermine free market economics as well as undermine individual choice.
2, Discuss how groups such as the American Medical Association and conservative or libertarian think tanks such as the Cato Institute have fought against universal health care. U.S. presidents and members of Congress have also been reluctant to pursue universal health care.
3, Discuss how there was substantial opposition to the Affordable Care Act among Republicans in Congress and a number of conservative interests. Democrats and President Obama were able to pass comprehensive health care reform in 2010.
