If the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increasing with time, should we expect an increase in the average global temperature? Explain.

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere contributes to the greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases allow the energy from sunlight to enter the atmosphere, but trap the re-radiated energy from escaping into space (which keeps the earth warm). However, the greenhouse effect is just one of many factors that affect earth's climate, so it is difficult to predict the impact accurately.
