Discuss the benefits and problems associated with urban sprawl.

What will be an ideal response?

As a city grows and extends (sprawls) beyond its historic boundaries, its overall ecological footprint and environmental impact grows.  Compared to centralized cities, suburbs have low-density housing located far from jobs and shopping centers which means that everyone must own and drive a car.  In addition, mass transit is expensive and difficult to accommodate the needs of residents in these suburban housing developments.  The houses are typically larger than those of a city dweller and freestanding, which translates into higher heating and cooling energy demands.  Large natural areas are converted to houses and streets can diminish biodiversity and degrades natural services.  On the other hand, people enjoy living in their spacious houses.  Many suburbs have the newest and best schools, better health care, and lower crime rates.
