How do you distinguish between the goal and the objective of a human service intervention? In other words, what should the goal reveal and what should the objective reveal and how are they different? Give an example of a goal and an objective for a familiar human service program or intervention.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Varies. The goal is a statement of the long-range benefit to the client, while the objective is a measured amount of progress toward the accomplishment of the goal. Both of these statements focus upon client benefit, but the goal is more long range. An example for a goal of the tutoring intervention for at-risk middle school students might be “To enhance the likelihood that at-risk middle school students will graduate from high school.” The objective might be “To improve the grades of at-risk middle school students.”
