Discuss the probable causes of a glass ceiling. What impact does a glass ceiling have on employee morale?
What will be an ideal response?
The glass ceiling is a barrier to advancement to the higher levels of an organization. This barrier may be due to stereotypes or company systems that adversely affect the development of women or minorities. It is likely caused by a lack of access to training programs, appropriate developmental job experiences, and to developmental relationships such as mentoring. Women and minorities often have trouble finding mentors because of lack of access to the "old boy network," managers' preference to interact with other managers of similar status rather than with line employees, and intentional exclusion by managers who have negative stereotypes about women's and minorities' abilities, motivation, and job preferences.
