India and Pakistan have been fighting over Kashmir. Some Kashmiris would like to join Pakistan, based on religious affinity; but a 2007 poll found that 87% of the citizens of Kashmir would like to become independent. Tensions remain, but still result in some loss of life. A similar situation exists in the Punjab, where members of the Sikh religion are trying to preserve some autonomy. In the northeastern region, adjacent to Burma (Myanmar) ethnic groups are seeking autonomy, if not outright statehood. Conflict in Sri Lanka has taken on a religious component as Hindu Tamils try to maintain their rights among the Buddhist majority in the country. Although Sri Lanka is at peace now, tensions remain.
