Imagine that hypothetically you were able to access a sex trafficking ring and that you want to collect specific information on how the leaders of this ring operate. What would be some of your research questions? What type of nonprobability sampling method would you use? Why do you think this method is appropriate? Then describe the precautions you would need to use when reporting your findings.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. I would be curious about how they recruit women and keep them controlled. I would also want to know what they do with their money and how they find johns. I would like to know how they evade law enforcement as well.
I would use a purposive sample. I would use this sampling method because I would be interested in a set of individuals with specific knowledge about the sex trafficking ring and ask such I would pick out particular individuals from the sex trafficking ring.
This method is appropriate because of the exploratory nature of this study and the fact that they would be willing to talk and are knowledgeable about the operations of the ring.
I would need to make sure that I do not generalize my results to all criminal syndicates or to all sex trafficking rings. I would need my readers to know it was a nonprobability sample and is not representative.
