How can evaluators and researchers address and ensure the fundamental right of participants to voluntarily choose to participate in a study?
What will be an ideal response?
There are several avenues to ensure that participants freely choose to be engaged in research: (1) recognize that the client and agency workers may feel intimidated by management, external funding sources, or university based scientists, and this may be heightened for vulnerable populations; (2) assure potential participants that they can choose to participate or not participate and they will not lose or gain benefits based on their decisions. Participants may feel they will be denied services, promotions, raises, etc. or they may only participate because of the financial incentives involved with the research. No pressure should be put on participants to be involved in the study; (3) identify risks and benefits as well as assurances in writing; (4) asses the ability to give consent as some people may be unable to provide a valid consent due to their age, disability, or some other circumstance that prevents them from fully understanding the study. In these cases other measures must be taken to ensure voluntary participation, including consent from parents and legal guardians; and (5) revisit the information provided and update it as appropriate, particularly if the circumstances, procedures, or other key aspect of the study changes.
