The trachea and esophagus begin as the pharynx and split at the level of the epiglottis. The trachea (lined with cartilaginous half-rings anteriorly and longitudinal muscle posteriorly) is anterior to the esophagus. The trachea is the passageway for air while the esophagus is responsible for movement of food-stuffs to the stomach.
