List the factors that could cause abnormal levels of secretion from endocrine glands, and explain why target cells may display abnormal responsiveness to a hormone
What will be an ideal response?
Hyposecretion (secreting too little hormone) may be due to seven factors: (1) lack of necessary enzymes in the gland, (2) lack of a dietary nutrient needed for hormone synthesis, (3) chemical that destroys the gland, (4) an autoimmune disorder; antibodies destroy the gland, (5) disease destroys the gland, (6) surgery removes the gland, and (7) idiopathic or unknown cause. Hypersecretion (secreting too much hormone) may be caused by tumors or excessive stimulation by abnormal antibodies that mimic the tropic hormone that normally stimulates the gland. Target cells may be unresponsive to a hormone due to a lack of receptors or a lack of enzyme necessary to carry out the response after the hormone attaches to a receptor.
