Answer: The first component of the system involves sensing a signal from the environment using a sensor kinase protein bound within the cell's membrane exposed to the environment. The kinase autophosphorylates itself once signaled and creates a phosphate ion for the second component. A response regulator protein occurring within the cell's cytoplasm then binds the phosphate ion and finally binds DNA. The regulation in response to this DNA binding can either be positive or negative, depending on the system.
