Explain and give an example to illustrate each of the five responses that typify the
non-confrontational style.
What will be an ideal response?
Placating involves attempting not to rock the boat by getting angry and disagreeing
with others. People do this in order to avoid threats to their self-worth. For example,
Amanda is afraid that her relationship with William will end if she disagrees with him,
so she often goes along with what he wants rather than maintaining her position on
issues. Distracting involves changing the subject in order to avoid conflict. For
example, every time Martha brings up a touchy subject her roommate, Megan,
immediately begins talking about something lighter and effectively avoids the conflict.
Others use computing or removing themselves from the conflict by remaining cool and
aloof. For example, Fred rarely owns his emotions in a conflict. He often talks about a
situation in third person. Some people simply withdraw from a conflict either
physically or psychologically. Darren thinks that his wife is constantly nagging at him.
When a conflict begins, he often leaves the house to go play golf or simply turns on the
television. Others give in during a conflict situation. For example, Garret doesn?t like
seafood, but he quickly agrees to go eat seafood with his girlfriend to avoid a conflict.
