Explain why there is a difference in the mechanism by which an animal cell and a plant cell accomplishes cytokinesis
What will be an ideal response?
Animal cells are surrounded by a plasma membrane only. The plasma membrane is flexible and so can be pinched in as one cell divides to form two. In addition to a plasma membrane, a plant cell is surrounded by a cell wall that is rigid. This type of structure cannot be pinched in. Therefore the division between two new cells must be formed by vesicles that contain cell wall components. The vesicles migrate to the place where the new walls are to be built and then fuse to form the partition.
