Discuss how mutations in proteins can be used to examine the link between a person's genotype and that person's phenotype
What will be an ideal response?
Mutations are heritable changes in a DNA sequence; they can occur in any cell of the body, including those that give rise to sperm and eggs. Mutated genes can produce either an abnormal, nonfunctional protein; a partially functional protein; or, in some cases, no protein at all. Other mutations can affect the timing and level of gene expression, while some may result in no phenotypic change and are essentially invisible. Mutations can also alter the amino acid sequence of a protein. Changes in proteins produced by mutations, in turn, produce changes in phenotype that range from insignificant to lethal.
