The seven steps with possible examples are;
Step 1: Identify the task.
Example: Remembering what was read
Step 2: Choose a strategy to facilitate completion of the task.
Example: Insert stop points in a text and then tell students to paraphrase what was read
Step 3: Explicitly teach the strategy.
Example: Model for students what they should do when they come to a stop point
Step 4: Explain the benefits to be expected.
Example: Describe that grades will improve, frustration will decrease, and reading will be easier and more fun.
Step 5: Provide guided practice.
Example: Work through an activity with students; have them apply the strategy
Step 6: Provide feedback.
Example: Give positive and corrective comments, oral and/or written, regarding consistent and appropriate use of the strategy
Step 7: Teach students how to generalize the use of the strategy.
Example: Show students how to use this technique with reading materials in school (content-area subjects) and out of school
