Secondary growth, which increases the diameter of a plant, occurs in some eudicots. This increase in diameter or girth, is due to the presence of lateral meristems. There are two types of lateral meristems, the cork cambium and the vascular cambium.  The cork cambium contributes to the outer bark while the vascular cambium produces both secondary xylem and secondary phloem.
