What insights do we gain about our relationship with the natural environment from the structural-functional and social-conflict theoretical approaches? How might this knowledge lead to a more environmentally sustainable way of life?

What is an Ideal response?

• Social-conflict theory highlights the role of inequality in environmental problems. This includes Marxist class-conflict theory, which claims that the capitalist economy harms the environment as elites increase economic productivity in search of greater personal profits. It also includes environmental racism theory, which states that the poor—and especially minorities—suffer most from environmental hazards, a pattern known as environmental racism.
• Structural-functional theory looks at the connection between environmental issues, technology, and culture. In the same way that the problems of the environment are created by the operation of society, society also has the ability to adapt to change or to correct environmental problems.
