Compare and contrast Charter 77 with Solidarity?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. The Czechoslovaks founded Charter 77, which called on the government to abide by the Helsinki Final Act, fought against the imprisonment of citizens without due process, and sought to create a civil society. Czech artists, intellectuals, and engineers signed the charter along with workers and average people; it was not a political movement per se, but had a grassroots, populist identity. It was crushed by the Soviet regime but its impact was felt decades later in the Velvet Revolution. Solidarity was a movement that started in the shipyards of Gdansk. Led by Anna Walentynowicz and LechWa?esa, established Solidarity to negotiate better working conditions and wages. Rooted in and buttressed by a strong Catholic faith, the movement gained traction throughout Poland until it was violently crushed in 1981. Tanks were sent into the streets of Warsaw, but as with Charter 77, the ideals were not extinguished.
