Explain how viruses are postulated to cause cancer
What will be an ideal response?
Many viruses that are associated with cancer are capable of setting up latent chronic infections. This persistence can
cause chronic inflammation and immune system stimulation which may be the reason for cell hyperplasia and
eventually neoplasia. A good example of this is that people who recover from hepatitis B virus usually do not
develop hepatocellular carcinoma, but people who develop chronic hepatitis B virus infections are at high risk for
developing hepatocellular carcinoma.
