Kiri is a social worker at a large public high school in an affluent suburban community. The school has recently experienced a spike in suspensions due to unlawful possession (and sometimes sale) of prescription medications on campus. The school has also called police on several occasions to report the students for possession of a controlled substance, which has angered some of the parents in the community. How might this problem be analyzed from a macro, mezzo, and micro perspective?

What will be an ideal response?

Micro perspective may involve individual assessments to determine what is behind each student's possession, sale, and/or use. The mezzo perspective may look at what pressures exist at the school that lead to use of prescription drugs: peer pressure, significant academic pressure, for example. The macro perspective may see that the recreational use of prescription drugs has been on the rise over the last decade in the United States, perhaps in part due to doctors' increased tendency to prescribe drugs for depression and anxiety and the shifting attitudes about the use of such drugs.
