Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This additional carbon dioxide is causing a phenomenon called global warming. Which process "put" the carbon into our fossil fuels? Explain the process
What will be an ideal response?
The process is photosynthesis. Hundreds of millions of years ago green plants combined carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll to form organic matter. Over millions of years this organic matter was subjected to pressure and high temperatures and eventually formed our fossil fuels. The carbon dioxide released from burning our fossil fuels was actually removed from the atmosphere millions of years ago. We are now returning it to the atmosphere in a very short period of time.
