Explain the four guidelines to open coding

What will be an ideal response?

1. Ask the data a specific and consistent set of questions: The researcher must always keep the question, "What is the original objective of the research study?" in mind. The coding may lead you toward your goal, or help you identify an unanticipated goal.
2. Analyze the data minutely: The initial content analysis should always begin with a broad statement, and the statement should be narrowed with substantial backing. Coding should include many categories initially, and minutely code each. This ensures extensive theoretical coverage that will allow systematic coding to build from the numerous elements emerging from the first phase of open coding.
3. Frequently interrupt the coding to write a theoretical note: In the course of coding, the patterns may trigger an idea. Researchers should jot down the ideas so they are not forgotten later. It should be noted where in each document similar comments, concepts, or categories seem to convey the same elements that originally triggered the idea (or theory, or hypothesis).
4. Never assume the analytic relevance of any traditional variable until the data prove it to be relevant: Even the most mundane variables must earn their way in coding. Even gender must be assessed to determine its analytical relevance in the coding if that is a variable of interest.
