If a ridge beam is used in place of a ridge board in a two-way pitched roof, ceiling joists are unnecessary. Explain why.

What will be an ideal response?

A ridge beam is a structural beam that provides support to rafters at ridge line. At the other end, the rafters are supported by a wall. In such a situation, the rafters are not subjected to outward thrust, which is the case when a ridge board is used. Hence, the ceiling joists that resist the outward thrust created in rafters are not needed when the ridge beam is used.
