If a client system characterizes his or her community as featuring only conflict, should the social worker attempt to adjust the client’s perspective? If so, how might this be done?

What will be an ideal response?

Social workers need to respect the worldviews of clients, and accept clients “where they are at”, without assuming a need to promote other values by suggesting that the client’s perspective is distorted or incomplete. On the other hand, it is important for the social worker to explore the client’s feelings about community life, and perhaps point out some ways in which the client’s goals may be facilitated by becoming part of a more supportive community. This practice expands client choices but does not promote the social worker’s own perspective.
