Several years ago the nation was shocked by the terrible impact of Hurricane Katrina on the people of New Orleans. While this was a great tragedy, perhaps it can provide lessons for social workers. It may suggest ideas for how social workers could respond to such an event, to minimize the physical and emotional damage done and to facilitate the recovery process. The situation in New Orleans was one in which a generalist approach to social work practice would be highly applicable.

What will be an ideal response?

Try to assume the perspectives of three types of social workers in New Orleans, from the school system, department of social services, and department of corrections. How would you organize and implement one intervention strategy for New Orleans from each of the five “levels” of generalist practice? Be sure to articulate your target population(s) while doing so. Draw on specific theories or intervention strategies you have learned in this textbook to support your decisions about intervention strategies.

This assignment is self-explanatory, and the instructor should determine “weights” of the value of each section toward the final grade.
