Is our society in general, and the criminal justice system specifically, operated under a social conflict perspective or a consensus perspective?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Should include these potential items.
We are operating under a social conflict perspective
One may try to argue that we are consensus because it takes a majority or consensus of the voters to elect our representatives
However, another may argue that the politicians use the system to further their positions
Those who have the economic and political power are not going to do anything that will harm their power
We are taught to fear street crime more than white-collar crime
The powerful are more likely to commit white-collar crime than are the weaker members of society
It is those weaker members that may commit street crime
By focusing our attention and fear on street crime we miss the white-collar crime
And white-collar crime costs society more (in terms of dollars) than does street crime
