As a manager, you are faced with a problem involving a very popular and productive employee. The employee has committed a highly unethical act, and you must decide what to do. Using the critical thinking decision-making process, describe your first three steps regarding this issue.
What will be an ideal response?
Your first step is to list your options; in this case, you could either do nothing, fire
the person, or engage in disciplinary action. Next, you should list the stakeholders that could be affected by your decision: employees that know the employee under question, the employee herself, the company and its lost revenue if the employee is fired, and any customers or other stakeholders involved. Now, you should apply each of the six ethical theories to the issue to try to analyze the problem from various ethical perspectives. For example, from the egoist perspective, you would consider how firing or keeping the employee would affect your own career, salary, and reputation. As a third step, you would consider the strengths and weaknesses of each option through the lens of each theory.
